Patreon: Patronage for the internet age

The practice of patronage – bestowing financial support on e.g. artists – is a time-honored tradition. In times gone by, patronage was both highly personal, and something reserved for the rich and very rich. One of the many things the internet has done, is to make such pursuits available to the crowds. My favorite example is found at Patreon. As a Patreon member, I am able to directly support content creators whose work I enjoy. Here are a few examples:

  • Tim Buckley is the creator of one of my favorite webcomics, Ctrl+Alt+Del
  • Laura Kampf is a maker, showing her creative creations on YouTube
  • C&Rsenal are making a show about the first world war, centered on the weapons used

These are just some of the creators I support. Not only am I happy to do so, it makes me proud to see them put something out there online, and know that I, in some infinitesimally small way, contributed to making that happen. If you think you might want to support someone on Patreon, too, go on over and have a look.
