You may, for one reason or another, need to install Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) on your Windows client computer. You may want to perform administrative tasks in Active Directory Users and Computers, administer Certificates in Active Directory Certificate Services, or administer DNS or DHCP in DNS or DHCP Server Tools.
Whatever the case may be, you need to install RSAT. OK, that was easy, we’re done now, right? Unfortunately, not as easy as that. That would be, I don’t know, cheating or something. Depending on what version of Windows you have, the steps differ a little. Here’s how you do it:
Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 (v. 1803 and lower):
- Download and install the correct package for your OS:
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off
- Expand Role Administration Tools
- Enable the desired features (or the entire feature set) by checking the check box next to the feature (or Role Administration Tools for the entire set).
The tools will now be available from Control Panel > Administrative Tools
Windows 10 (v. 1809 and higher):
- Right-click the Start button and go to Settings
- Go to Apps > Manage optional features > Add feature
- Select the tools that you want to install, and click Install
The tools will be available under Start > Windows Administrative Tools
