An alert for old posts

As some of you may have noticed, my old posts now feature the following notice:

This article was been published more than 6months ago. The information contained herein may be outdated.

I implemented this following a particularly obnoxious example of someone reposting an old article to their own ends, after which a Norwegian blogger advocated labelling one’s old posts and articles with a notice that they are, in fact, old. I have achieved this by installing a plugin for WordPress called Simple Alert for Old Posts, and setting it to pop up on all posts that are older than six months.

Why do I do this? While the blog post linked above does a good job of outlining my reasons, it is in Norwegian, and I feel the salient points would do well to be translated to English. From forteller.net, then (my translation):

Sharing of old news items has been a problem for a long time. I regularly come across people sharing news months and even years after the fact, without even a glance at the age of the news being shared.

For what it’s worth, I see the same trend as does Børge, and have been thinking about doing something like this for some time. His blog post was the kick in the pants that I needed. I implemented this change because I believe in being an example to follow; in the words of Mahatma Gandhi:

Be the change you want to see in the world
